Dr. Ir Peter WONG Kwok Keung, GBS, JP - a renowned Hong Kong entrepreneur, philanthropist, former Deputy Director of the Committee for Learning and Cultural and Historical Data of the National Committee of the CPPCC, member of the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th National Committees of the CPPCC for the Hong Kong Region, and Chairman of Kum Shing Group - passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 2nd, 2023, at the age of 81 due to illness.
Dr. Wong's funeral took place in Hong Kong from November 16 to 17. A solemn public memorial and farewell ceremony was held by a funeral committee formed by various sectors of society. Yin Zonghua, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, who previously served alongside Dr. Wong in the CPPCC, attended the service to offer condolences to the family and present wreaths on behalf of national leaders, including Wang Huning, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, and Ding Xuexiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Vice Premier of the State Council, and Leader of the Central Leading Group on Hong Kong and Macau Work.
CY Leung, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, served as the Chairman of the Funeral Committee and delivered a eulogy on behalf of all sectors. He fully recognized Dr. Wong's active participation in political affairs and total dedication to social development over many years, highlighting his outstanding contributions to maintaining the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and the accurate implementation of "One Country, Two Systems." He praised Dr. Wong's passion for public welfare and education, his efforts in promoting the business sector's participation in national development, and his long-standing support for charity and education in both Hong Kong and the Mainland, honoring his selfless contributions to the country and Hong Kong society.
Over 1,000 guests attended the service to pay their respects and offer condolences, including Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and his wife, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan, alongside numerous senior HKSAR Government officials, leaders of the Liaison Office, deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC), members of the CPPCC, leaders from political, business, academic, and community sectors, and friends from all walks of life. Financial Secretary Paul Chan and 25 other political and business leaders served as Vice Chairmen of the Funeral Committee, while 150 prominent community figures - including members of the Executive and Legislative Councils, NPC deputies, and CPPCC members - served as committee members.
Representatives from dozens of organizations and institutions attended the public memorial service, including the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong (where Dr. Wong served as Vice President), the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations (where he served as Chairman), representatives of the local government of his hometown, Dongguan, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (where he was named an Outstanding Alumnus), Hong Kong Baptist University (where he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship), HKBU Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, and his long-term business partner, CLP Group. Wreaths were sent by institutions including the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, the General Office of the CPPCC National Committee, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, and the Committee for Learning and Cultural and Historical Data of the National Committee of the CPPCC.
Fourteen distinguished guests served as pallbearers, including Chan Wing-kee, Standing Honorary Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations; Tam Kam-kau, Chairman of the Hong Kong Dongguan Coalitions; Chris Tang, Secretary for Security; Erick Tsang, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs; Yuen Mo, Standing Honorary Chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong; and Wong Chun-hong, Executive Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations.
